The Lady Bulldogs came out rocking new uniforms on Tuesday night and staged a dramatic comeback in their non-district match with Bonham before dropping game five to lose the match.
The Lady Warriors took an early 5-point lead in the first set behind the hard-hitting kills of Kelsey Barnes. The 6-foot senior blasted home three straight to get a 10-5 lead.
An ace by Brittnni Smith stopped that run but another senior, Ashley Sanders put in a kill to keep the visitors on top.
An Ashton James kill and her block /stuff got Howe to within four but they could get no closer as Bonham took the first set.
Howe really stepped up its play in the second as a kill by James gave Howe an early lead. Sophomore Morgan Bailey sent in a cross-court winner but the visitors came back to tie the set at 14 each.
Back-to-back aces by Smith reclaimed the lead but neither team could mount any sustained offense. With the set tied at 21-21, Katelyn Bardwell sent in a shot for Bonham. Jennifer Vincent had a kill to answer and after a Tiffani Batchelor kill had re-tied the set at 23 each a Bailey kill gave Howe the lead.
Bonham capitalized on a Howe error before Barnes knocked in the winner to get the Lady Warriors up 2-0 in games.
The Lady Bulldogs dominated the third set from the start. A soft shot that fell in for James gave Howe a 10-7 lead and they just kept on building the advantage. Another hard shot to the back line by James started a 6-0 Howe run and a Batchelor shot to the right corner made it a 19-11 game as the Lady Bulldogs cruised home with the win.
The fourth set was a back and forth affair as Jade Covington and Libby Cannaday got into the offensive flow for the Lady Bulldogs. A block by Covington gave Howe a 14-10 lead before Cannaday sent in an ace then followed with a kill to keep the lead at four.
Abby Lackey had two aces for Bonham and a kill by Taylor Gantt cut the lead to just one.
A kill by Madison Wilson and a service winner from James kicked the lead back to four. Wilson pushed home the game winner to even the match at 2-2.
Bonham errors kept Howe in the tie-breaker as the Lady Bulldog offense went south. Bonham had taken a 9-6 lead before their misplays allowed Howe to tie the set at 10-10.
Barnes knocked down a winner but another Lady Warrior miscue tied it at 11. Bonham got a kill by Bardwell to start the final run. Four straight points by the Lady Warriors, the final coming on a shot by Sanders, gave Bonham the match.
Howe plays in the Bells tournament on Thursday and Saturday with a Friday date with the state's 10th ranked Class
1-A team in Savoy.
