Howe's dynamic duo, Matt Dowlen and Kenny "Birdman" Herbert led the way to a 58-50 win in Gunter on Tuesday night in front of an enthusiastic, coaches vs cancer crowd.
Dowlen finished with 24 points for the night and Herbert had a double-double with 17 points and more than a dozen rebounds.
Howe had the answer every time the Tigers made a run, usually with a Dowlen three or a rebound put back by Herbert.
Things got a little testy in the second quarter as Dalton Harris denied an easy layup to Nick Yansky who was driving the base line. Yansky got up and made a move towards Harris before the officials restored order and hit Yansky with a technical foul.
Dowlen had a three-pointer in every quarter and he dropped in a pair at the end of the third to bump the lead to 10.
Gunter cut the lead to three late in the fourth period on a bucket by Richard Young who had 13 to lead all Tiger scorers.
No need to panic for the visitors as Dowlen was in a zone on this night. After running a little clock, Howe got the ball to Dowlen at the right side of the arc and the senior calmly dropped in his fifth trey of the game and the Bulldog lead was back to four.
Gunter was battling the Howe defense and the clock and its rushed shots had no chance as the Bulldogs collected their fifth win of the district season.
