Dorchester car accident leaves 1 dead
BY MARY JANE FARMER
HERALD DEMOCRAT
A Gunter man, Richard Knight, died in a Tuesday evening crash between his motorcycle and a pickup on FM 902 west of Dorchester.
Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Mark Tackett said that Mr. Knight was riding a 2003 Harley Davidson west when, at 4:50 p.m., he entered a curve near the Ranger Creek Road intersection. At the same time, L.W. Buck of Melissa, moving east in a 2004 Dodge pickup, entered the same curve, a right-hand curve for him. Tackett said that the pickup crossed over the center line. He braked and took evasive action to the left. Mr. Knight also braked and the motorcycle struck the passenger side of the pickup.
First responders from several agencies, including Howe, Collinsville and Gunter, arrived to help, and Texas Vital Care transported Mr. Knight to Texas Health Presbyterian-WNJ in Sherman, where Dr. Trisha Dipprey pronounced him dead. Mr. Knight was 49 years old.

Lessons learned... : 8/4/2010
should have been learned in driver's ed. Stay in your lane. Why no tickets. And to those who "hate motorcycles" you sit at and intersection and grumble when i go by. Creep closer and closer towards me, waiting to Rush away to nowhere in particular. EVERYONE JUST SLOW DOWN WHEN YOUR IN UNFAMILIAR PLACES. MAYBE EVEN JUST GO THE SPEED LIMIT.

I know this family and the situation is more complex and the man responsible will have his time in court. Justice will be served. In the meantime, there are many who are hurting from this terrible incident. This had nothing to do with alcohol but there is a lesson out of all of this...it will all be told in time. I hope you are patient without premature judgment on the newspaper, the driver, the motorcyclist, etc.

cutting corners... : 8/2/2010
People are always cutting corners in the curves on FM 902. I guess they don't realize that the double, solid yellow stripes in the middle of the road are there for a reason. I hate that some one had to die from another persons carelessness, regardless of what type of vehicle they were driving. BTW, Texas Drivers Handbooks are still available to the public... for free!

To Murder cycles : 7/30/2010
Motorcycles don't kill people who ride with respect of the laws, it is people in cars that don't pay attention and share the roadways that kill motorcyclists.

Arrest? : 7/30/2010
So officer Tackett stated that L.W. Buck's vehicle was OVER the center line and therefore being operated in a reckless fashion that DIRECTLY resulted in the killing of person and yet no arrest was made? Surely this can't be the whole story? This sets a dangerous precedence. I mean if I do the same thing and kill a family of 5, riding their bicycles, do I get a free pass too???

I guess you missed the part where it said the pickup crossed the center line?

Wonder if there is a statstic of how many people have died on motorcycles in Grayson County alone in the last year. I hate motorcycles. Not the riders .
So sorry for Mr Knights family.

DWI : 7/29/2010
I wonder did officer Tackett subject the driver of the dodge pickup to a sobriety test, or is this just another case of motorcyclist at fault by reason of not being alive to tell his side of what happened. Was this man from Melissa charged with anything, and if so, why was this not reported? You should rename your ragsheet "The Herald Halfreport"! Had this driver of the dodge pickup ever benn arrested for DWI you can bet the "Herald Halfreport" would have printed that factoid.
