Local Athletes Off and Running
From Staff Reports
One new club in Van Alstyne specializes in staying on the move.
The Van Alstyne Multi-Sport Club from VA Physical Therapy and Fitness has been training for different events: 5K and 10K runs, half-marathons and marathons, triathlons, duathlons and adventure races under the direction of personal trainer Pam Carroll. Recently the club added a youth division, forming the Kid's Multi-Sports Club, also under the direction of Carroll.
The Kid's Club began training by preparing to participate in the Little Big Toen 5K in Van Alstyne in May.
Interest grew, and the kids liked the idea of continuing to train for additional events including duathlons (Run/bike/run) and triathlons (Swim/bike/run). The group will continue to compete in additional events this summer and fall.
Members from the adult and youth clubs made their first united appearance May 31 at the Memorial Day 5K in McKinney hosted by the Stonebridge Racers.
Participants included Brian, Andrea, and Adam Chick, Pam Carroll, Shanna Howell, Steve, Jake, and Luke Hundt, Jeremy, Sadie and Sydney Ingram, Christy, Grayci and Raigan Oldfield, Raigan Servati, Tina Taylor and Jessie and Paul West.
The club proudly brought home four first-place medals, one second and two third-place medals. Many other participants placed in the top 10 for their age groups.
The second event for both clubs was the Summer Solstice Duathlon and 5K at White Rock Lake on June 20.
The club took two relay teams and four individual competitors. Once again, months of training paid off as both groups brought home more trophies. Trophy winners included:
Jake Hundt, first in his age group; Steve Hundt fourth in his age group; Pam Carroll first in her age group and fifth overall; and Jeannette West, seventh in her age group.
Both relay teams were successful with a fourth-place overall win for Adam Chick, Sadie Ingram and Shelby Litzkow and a sixth-place overall win for Christy, Darrel and Raigan Oldfield. The club then celebrated both Father's Day and the big win together as a family.
The adult club plans to compete in two triathlons, the Cooper Clinic Summer Triathlon at Craig Ranch on July 24 and in September at Stonebridge Ranch.
The kids club is currently planning to participate in its first triathlon in August and then with the adult club in September.
