Prosper Blanks VA

Prosper 6, Van Alstyne 0

By Jack Walker

Staff Writer

The Panthers opened their 2010 baseball season in Prosper on Monday night and fell to the Eagles 6-0. Prosper pitcher Justin Sheets was in mid-season form on the cold night, limiting the Panthers to just two hits in his six innings of work.

The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to get off to the quick start.

Van Alstyne's most serious scoring threat came in the third inning, getting back-to-back singles from Tyler Rains and Chris Gerzina but they failed to capitalize on that opportunity.

Gerzina was one of four pitchers used by the Panthers and he worked two innings, giving up just one run and a pair of hits.

Montana Darnell pitched a couple scoreless innings for Van Alstyne but the Panther bats were silent against the hard-throwing Sheets.

David Goodenow singled to lead off the Van Alstyne seventh, then swiped second to get into scoring position. A Tanner Neill ground out moved him to third but he was left stranded as the Eagles completed the shutout.

Weather permitting (always a factor) the Panthers travel to Pottsboro to compete in a three-day tournament this week-end.
